Europan: urban housing and retail in Linz
In an area with such a variety of housing typologies, the main goal is to start a transformation process to give a global identity to the neighborhood. This process starts with a master plan that unifies these different systems and establishes a common space as a starting point for the change.
This proposal creates the first common urban square in the area, a place of quality always reachable by walking and surrounded by facades where users can feel in the center of their district. The mix of dense housing buildings and a commercial complex is the key to reach the density that a liveable area requires. These buildings need a certain height to be considered a landmark on the area. Nevertheless, the number of floors is related to the surrounding constructions and to the distances with them. As a result of all those strategies, the project combines the housing blocks with the commercial facilities that appear on the ground floor, especially with the supermarket included on the program. With the facades, heights and materials of those volumes, it organizes hierarchically the public space and creates a new urban center in Europastrasse.
